Home Improvement Tips for You
Improve Your Home With This Sound Advice
Put in motion detectors around the front door of your residence. When you are only turning on the light when required, you are saving a lot of money on electricity. Motion detectors installed on your outdoor lights will deter thieves.
When working with wood, it is important to carefully measure angles, degrees, and lengths; never guesstimate. No matter how perfect you may think you are, using a speed square, level and tape measuring will make your work better.
If you are doing home improvement work on water pipes in your kitchen or bathroom turn off the shutoff valves. You’ll need to find the main shut-off in your home before you start any work that involves your plumbing. Neglecting this step can give you a flood to deal with in addition to your initial plumbing problem.
Make sure the contractor listens to what you have to say. Your contractor needs to be aware of your concerns. An inattentive contractor may not complete the job as you intended. So do whatever you need to do so that the contractor actually “hears” what you are asking for.
Have you ever looked at a home, wondered about the number of bathrooms inside and whether that was enough? There is a direct correlation between the quantity of bathrooms and the value of the property. Adding an additional bath or two can add a lot more value to your house.
You need to check out your roof to see if there are any maintenance issues during the spring. You will want to look for curling or blistering of shingles and do some repairs. If you repair minor damages to your roof as you see them, you will avoid major and costly roof repairs down the road.
Give your porch an “up” as well. This is the first things seen by visitors and it’s your home’s first impression. Make sure it is all neatly organized and, if possible, add a little style with outdoor decorations, such as flowers, varnish, lights, or furniture. As an added benefit, you can enjoy an increased home value.
If you want to spruce up your living room, add some unique accents for flair. Leopard or zebra prints can pack a punch in moderation.
If you intend to add exterior lighting, you should contemplate adding motion sensor lighting simultaneously. Motion activated lights add that extra bit of security, because they can scare a potential thief, and the light will alert you to their presence. It also saves you money on your electric bills.
You will save yourself a lot of money when you do energy saving home improvements, such as re-caulking your windows. In addition to the obvious insulation improvements, this can also prevent moisture from seeping in and stimulating mold growth. If the existing caulk has cracks, use a chisel to get rid of it, then re-caulk as necessary.
When you are thinking about making an improvement to your home, always think about the geographical location of your home. If you live in a warmer area, installing air conditioning would take priority over a fireplace. A pool would be great for the area, but not for a colder climate.
One improvement that can make your life easier is replacing ordinary paneling in areas with many pipes with waterproof paneling. These “green board” panels can absorb more water than regular ones, and will prevent mold from growing, both aspects of which are ideal for the area you are placing the panels in.
If you want to display your jewelery, you can use a straight coat rack. Because this design element will likely be near a door, use only inexpensive jewelry. Jewelry that is displayed nicely can be a lovely decorative touch to any room. This method has the added benefit of keeping your pieces free from tangles and knots. Keep your most used pieced within easy grasp.
